The Oyo State House of Assembly has appealed to the state government to take measures to install Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking devices in security patrol vehicles donated to the various security agencies.
The aim is to monitor the locations and movements of all patrol vehicles at all times of the day to improve service delivery and officer safety and to ensure rapid responses.
The call was contained in a motion read out in the House of Representatives on Thursday by the Member of Parliament representing Ibadan North West Constituency, Hon. Dawood Olalere, and co-sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin.
According to the proposal, more patrol vehicles will also need to be deployed at night, when most crimes are committed, which will make it more difficult for criminals to get their way.
It said in part: “Although security agencies have made commendable efforts to curb crime and maintain law and order, there is still room for improvement.” The crime rate in Oyo State remains worrisome, especially at night.
“Thefts, kidnappings, armed robberies and gang violence occur despite security surveillance, hence the need for the state government to introduce advanced technologies like GPS.”
Hon. In one of the resolutions, Olalere called on the executive branch of government through the state Ministry of Information and Orientation and the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State, BCOS, to raise public awareness on the “615” toll-free line to serve residents around The watch is available to report emergencies.
The motion also urged security agencies to be more proactive in fighting crime by making full use of the tools and equipment at their disposal and also adopting a good maintenance culture to ensure the longevity of all emergency vehicles provided to them by the state government.
