Panic button, GPS tracking on passenger buses now | Raipur News

Raipur: To ensure safety in passenger buses, the state government wants to install panic buttons. The aim of the initiative is to protect women and children who travel on school buses.
In an emergency, the control center is notified immediately by pressing the panic button. This feature provides real-time information such as the location and speed of the bus. The system is designed not only to curb driver misconduct, but also to reduce the likelihood of unwanted incidents.
The GPS control room for this system was established in the Dial 112 office to ensure efficient monitoring and response.
The Chhattisgarh Department for Transport has announced that the installation of panic buttons and GPS on buses will assist the public in dealing with potential hazards and unwanted incidents. Currently, the state operates a fleet of 12,000 passenger buses covering various routes across the state.
In addition, around 6,000 school buses are in use. This feature activates automatic alert mode when a school bus strays from its route. Four employees per shift are deployed in the control center, who are responsible for monitoring all buses and for notifying the police in a timely manner in the event of emergencies.
The staff of the nearest police station will react immediately and provide assistance to the affected passengers. These measures stem from the directives issued by the central government following the tragic Nirbhaya incident in Delhi, which stressed the need for improved security for women.
As part of this initiative, all passenger cars in Chhattisgarh will be tracked via a vehicle tracking platform using GPS installations funded by the Nirbhaya Fund. A vehicle tracking software developed by Chhattisgarh Infotech Promotion Society (CHiPS) Chhattisgarh allows real-time tracking of all vehicles.
The state government made the decision to install GPS systems and panic buttons on private buses to allow passengers to access real-time information about the whereabouts of the bus, said Dipanshu Kabra, commissioner of the Ministry of Transport.
