Poles owe billions in unpaid child support – English Section

Data from the National Debt Register show that 290,000 Poles have problems with child support arrears; 94 percent of them are men.

“This is one of the highest amounts in history,” it said in a statement.

Over the past three years, debts due to unpaid maintenance payments among the 18- to 25-year-old age group have increased tenfold.

The average alimony debt in Poland is PLN 53,000. If the debtor has been in arrears for years, this amount is often much higher.

“While maintenance debts in older age groups have remained at a similar level or have decreased in recent years, these debts are doubling every year among young people aged 18 to 25,” said Adam Łącki, head of the National Debt Register.

“In 2018 it was almost PLN 150,000, today it is already PLN 10.5 million. In the last three years it has increased almost tenfold,” he added.

55 percent of those who do not pay maintenance also have debts to other creditors, such as banks or debt collection agencies.
