According to Robin Matthews-Osmond, corporate communications manager at Brantford Police, under the new policy police will no longer routinely release a missing person’s gender or surname if a photograph of the missing person is available for use.
By posting only the first name, missing persons could still be found, but their full names would not be associated with the event forever, Matthews-Osmond said.
The gender of the missing person is no longer specified in the media release due to the risk of misidentifying the sexual orientation of those who have not been found. Once the individual has been located, a public notice will be made and any photos posted on social media/websites managed by Brantford Police will be removed.
“The goal of these changes is to better protect the privacy of the missing person while sending the information necessary and effective in locating the missing person, thereby preserving the integrity of the missing person investigation.
Matthews-Osmond said the policy change is consistent with that of many other police services.
