Pune Municipal Corporation Goes High Tech With GPS Tracking For Waste Disposal Workers – Punekar News

Pune, June 1st, 2023: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has successfully applied GPS tracking technology to improve the efficiency of sanitation workers in Aundh, Baner and Balewadi areas. Encouraged by the positive results, the administration has now decided to expand the tracking system city-wide.

This initiative includes employees involved in various tasks such as tree care, refuse collection, transportation and waste processing. The project is to be implemented throughout the city within the next three months.

Since Pune generates around 2,200 tons of waste every day and around 15,000 people are employed in waste management, the city government wants to exploit the full potential of this extensive system. To achieve this, they have adopted the Integrated Waste Management System as their operational framework.

The system was initially implemented as a pilot project in the regions mentioned above and involved 1,000 employees. Cleanliness, refuse collection and transport activities have been closely monitored over the past four months. This immediately provided information about the movement of employees within certain areas and the hygiene status of different zones.

These real-time insights significantly improved operational efficiencies and ensured proper waste collection and hauling in the designated areas. As a result, the general cleanliness in the region was noticeably improved.

A full presentation of the successful pilot project was made to City Commissioner Vikram Kumar in the presence of Waste Management Department Deputy Commissioner Asha Raut. The subsequent city-wide implementation will involve about 14,000 employees, drivers, project workers and 673 refuse collection vehicles at a cost of Rs. 10,000. 16 crores from the city government.

How the system works:

  1. Waste transport vehicles are fitted with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and a GPS system to track their movements.
  2. Information is collected on the amount of waste collected from each truck and the amount processed at the designated waste disposal facility.
  3. Sanitary workers wear GPS devices on their wrists that accurately record the hours they work and the distance they travel.
  4. The entire system is monitored from a central control room.

In particular, the implementation of the GPS tracking system has resulted in improved attendance and punctuality of the sanitation workers. Each worker wears a GPS strap on their wrist so the city government can track their presence. The presentation highlighted that regular and full-time attendance has resulted in a significant increase in waste collection of at least 125 tonnes per day at the Aundh Ward Office.

By harnessing the power of GPS technology, Pune Municipal Corporation aims to streamline its waste management operations, increase employee accountability, and further improve the city’s cleanliness and hygiene.
