The Palkhi Procession, a major religious event in Pune, involves the ceremonial procession of worshiped deities through the city streets. Thousands of believers gather to take part in this annual procession. It is therefore essential for the police to maintain order and ensure the safety of all participants.

Both the City of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Police have coordinated their efforts to deal with any challenges encountered during the procession. A comprehensive security plan has been put in place, including measures such as increased surveillance, strict crowd control protocols and the establishment of checkpoints at key locations.

According to Pune City Police Commissioner Retesh Kumaar, they have deployed over 6,000 police officers on the ground, including two other commissioners, 10 deputy commissioners, 116 police inspectors, 443 assistant police inspectors, 5,693 police officers and as part of the additional police force, an SRPF team of 500 home guards are put into service.

Kumaar said: “Around six to seven lakh devotees will arrive in the city and we have made arrangements accordingly. “To keep an eye on chain and cell phone thieves, we deployed a special team of 40 staff under ACP rank officers. GPS tracking and website updates have been introduced to follow the procession live.”

Police personnel are drawn from various special forces such as riot police, rapid response teams, and traffic police to deal effectively with potential law-and-order situations. Police are actively working with religious leaders, community officials, etc. Organizers are expected to encourage cooperation and ensure a peaceful move, officials said.

CCTV cameras and drones are also used to monitor the procession. Emergency medical centers have been set up at strategic locations along the route, officials said.
