Lucknow: To make traveling in road buses safer and more convenient for passengers, location tracking has become operational for up to 7,000 UPSRTC buses.
The group plans to equip its entire fleet of over 10,000 buses with GPS within three months.
The software and an app for live tracking of buses were unveiled by Independent Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh on Saturday.
The real-time location of the buses will be displayed on LED screens installed at the bus stations. Meanwhile, passengers can also download the “Margdarshi” app to track buses live.
As part of the integrated vehicle tracking system, buses are equipped with Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD), a GPS.
The integrated command control center at the UPSRTC headquarters will track real-time mobility of buses.
While the new buses being manufactured already have the device, nearly 7,000 of the company's old buses have also been equipped with the VLTD. The system is also integrated into the state police emergency number 112.
In addition to the live location, passengers also find out the estimated arrival and departure times of the buses for each searched location. The buses also have panic buttons and a passenger information system.
The vehicle tracking device has a dual SIM card, allowing it to switch between the two operators in regions with poor or impaired internet connectivity.
The integrated vehicle tracking system is part of the central program for which UP has been allocated Nirbhaya Fund to make buses safer for women passengers.
