Police have arrested a 31-year-old man after forensic experts found “evidence” of human remains in the home of a man who disappeared during the coronavirus lockdown in Heerhugowaard, North Holland in 2021.
Albert Visser was last seen in January 2021, but it wasn't until October that a friend notified the police.
The police initially did not suspect any wrongdoing because the 67-year-old was known to have financial problems. A spokesman said: “He could have moved abroad [but] Based on the results of our investigation, we now assume that he died as a result of a crime.”
Visser lived in the house with his son and his girlfriend. A neighbor told NH Nieuws that they often heard heated arguments in the house, possibly because of a financial conflict the two were involved in after selling the house to their son. Visser continued to live in the house as a tenant.
Suspicions grew when Visser failed to appear at a court hearing on the matter in early 2021 and the man kept a diary of his daily energy consumption, which ended on January 10 this year. Police believe this is a likely indication that he disappeared that day.
Police would not confirm whether the man they arrested was Visser's son.
