Report Shows 170 Million Americans Own GPS Tracking Devices as Market Grows

Report forecasts growth over the next six months and covers consumer concerns about technology

Did you know that 70 million Americans will purchase at least one personal GPS device in the next six months? How about the fact that at least 17 million personal GPS devices like Apple's AirTag and competitor Tile will be given away this holiday season?

SafeHome.org conducted a survey of over 1,000 adults on a wide range of GPS tools to determine the popularity and public concern surrounding these devices.

According to a study by SafeHome, these personal GPS devices, which include accessories like smartwatches and fitness monitors, are already used by 170 million Americans. Although the technology is becoming increasingly popular, it also brings with it concerns:

  • One in three users has serious concerns about the data security of their devices
  • Most people were concerned about devices that could track children's locations. Despite the concerns, the devices will become increasingly popular over the next six months, with the share of all GPS device sales increasing from two percent to eight percent

SafeHome's report also includes personal GPS device buying tips, including what to look for in terms of technology, connectivity, power source, functionality, interface, ease of use and security features.
