“Rider security remains a top priority” – UCI aims to introduce GPS tracking for every driver before the World Championships

After the announcement of the Tour de Suisse, that they equip all bicycles and vehicles in the racing convoy with GPS trackers, the UCI announced that it would get their own approach before the Road World Championships 2025 at the end of September.

“The UCI welcomes the initiative of the Tour de Suisse organizers to introduce progressive driving persecution,” said Cycling's management committee in a statement this week. “Both parties are in contact to evaluate the results of this implementation”.

The Tour de Suisse conducts the advanced persecution after accidents that led to death at the Junior Women's Road Race 2024 at the World Championships in Zurich at the Junior Women's Road Race in 2023. The men's tour of de Suisse runs from June 15th to 22nd and the Frauentour de Suisse from June 12th to 15th.

Last month, the race director Olivier Senn outlined in a media publication that participation for the teams would be voluntary, but hoped that everyone would take part in the introduction of comprehensive tracking.

“Each bike is equipped with a small tracker that is alerted at certain anomalies, e.g. if the bike does not move for 30 seconds, the route leaves or abruptly changes the speed,” said Senn. “In such cases, we are notified immediately and can react. We will also use trackers in the convoy because each radio is equipped with a tracker. The information is collected in the security command center, in which we can monitor the entire situation and intervene immediately if necessary.”

The immediacy of the identification was missing in the tragic incident in which Furrer was involved last September, and it was not known how long it was injured after the invisible crash at the Road World Championship.

“At the same time, the UCI is developing its own solutions that are presented at the UCI Road World Championships 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda,” said the bicycle manager.
