Road championships 2025: UCI set the GPS tracking system for all drivers

The World Cycling management committee will use a GPS tracking system for all drivers at the Road World Championship.

The UCI (Union Cyclist Internationale) has confirmed that the system is introduced to improve the driver's security at the tournament in Rwanda.

The trackers are presented to establish the position of every driver after the death of Muriel Furrer during the Junior women's race at last year's Road World Championships in Zurich.

The 18-year-old Swiss cyclist crashed and became unconscious in a forest area for about an hour and a half because the organizers did not know that they were inpatient and needed help.

The UCI has banned radio communication between drivers and teams in the worlds in the past 15 years.

Safety tracking technology was tested during the Tour de Romandie feminine in Switzerland last month.

The UCI disqualified five teams from this raceexternal When they refused to choose a driver from their team to test the under-saddle device.

The UCI said the system “enable the real -time monitoring of data regarding the position and speed of the entire peloton and thus enable immediate identification of unusual situations, like a driver who suddenly stops on the course”.

UCI President David Lappartant said that the introduction of the system was “an important and necessary progress”.

The Road World Championships will take place from September 21 to 28 in Kigali, Rwanda.
