NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, the Supreme Court obtained the response from the center to a plea for uniform “gender and religion-neutral” reasons for all citizens when granting alimony in marital disputes.

A bank under the direction of Chief Justice SA Bobde sent communications to the ministries of home affairs, law and justice of the Union and for the development of women and children through the PIL submitted by BJP leader and lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay.

The bank, which also included Judges AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian, heard senior attorney Meenakshi Arora on Upadhyay’s behalf and said, “We are very cautious about giving notice.

“The plea calls on the government to take appropriate action to remove the prevailing anomalies of alimony and support and standardize them for all citizens without discrimination based on religion, race, occupation, gender or place of birth.

The petition, filed by attorney Ashwani Kumar Dubey, states that despite the eloquent provisions in the constitution, the central government has not even created gender-neutral, religiously neutral uniform maintenance and support grounds for all citizens.
