The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion authored by Supervisor Kathryn Barger to support Senate Bill 616, which will prioritize child safety in custody hearings in the family court system.
“It is an honor to support this important law in memory of Piqui, an innocent child whose life was tragically ended when he was murdered by his father during a custody battle,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “I am confident that SB 616 will pass state legislation so family judges and staff can benefit from the proposed resources and training to help identify trauma in young children.”
SB 616, known as “Piqui’s Act,” is based on the tragic 2017 killing of 5-year-old “Piqui” by his father. If approved, this bill will help California allocate vital federal funds to protect victims of child abuse and domestic violence Violence by aligning the provisions of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) to provide services and programs to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.
