Authorities are searching for a person missing off the coast of Fire Island.
The United States Coast Guard Northeast reported that it received an emergency alert about 25 miles southeast of Fire Island just after midnight on Thursday, October 13.
“An HC-144 aircraft and MH-60 helicopter were immediately taken off from Air Station Cape Cod,” the Coast Guard reported. “The flight crew reported a white radiator, oil sheen and other debris.”
A motor lifeboat also began to search the area.
During the search, one survivor was recovered who suffered from “significant injuries,” officials said.
According to the report around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said one person was missing and was believed to be wearing a life jacket.
