I filed for divorce a year ago because my husband was addicted to gambling and went into debt several times even though I encouraged him to stop.
I didn’t ask him for alimony because I knew he had a lot of debts, even though my monthly salary is only about 10 million VND ($414). This amount is just enough to cover expenses for me and my three-year-old daughter, and I have no savings.
My daughter and I live with my parents, who are also not doing well. My parents have always encouraged me to get back together with my ex-husband as they believe it is best for us.
They even stopped me from asking for alimony from my ex-husband, saying, “He couldn’t even take care of himself,” even though all my friends who knew our story said I should ask him for alimony.
As far as I know, my ex-husband’s current job is stable and his monthly salary is between 12 and 13 million VND. Occasionally he comes by my parents’ house to visit us, and each time he brings a piece of cloth or a few snacks as a gift for our daughter, nothing more.
Should I ask him to send child support money, even just VND 1-2 million per month, to have some savings in case of financial difficulties in the future?
