SIFF launches campaign to reform maintenance laws

Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF), a men's rights NGO, has launched a campaign aimed at reforming maintenance laws across the country. Recently, SIFF activists went to the district court in Shivajinagar district of Pune to raise awareness about maintenance laws in India. At a rally around the court premises, they received positive responses from the litigants and also submitted their demands to the chief judge of the court.

Sagar Gunthal, SIFF consultant, said: “Indian courts often impose exorbitant maintenance amounts in matrimonial cases and even lead financially independent women to demand substantial maintenance payments. This is why we launched the Woman is a Burden campaign using #1CroreAlimony. on social media.”

“We have received encouraging responses, with several posts garnering millions of views and widespread attention. This highlights the looming threat of alimony that impacts husbands in various areas of life when marriage does not go as planned,” he added.

SIFF co-founder Anil Murty stressed: “The situation is dire for men, especially those in short-term marriages. It is absurd that a man who has been married for just six months is expected to pay ₹50,000 to ₹1,000,000 in maintenance. If he is unable to do so.” To comply, he could face the sale of property or even a civil prison sentence. How can a man who earns ₹5 lakh/year afford such exorbitant amounts?”

He further elaborated, “The judiciary's tacit endorsement of this alimony trend persists despite numerous women empowerment programs introduced since the 1990s. Women-centric laws are being grossly abused.”

SIFF advocates making alimony decisions based on the length of the marriage rather than imposing a lifelong financial burden on husbands.
