Singapore – A couple were in court over a disagreement over the amount of child support their ex-husband had to pay. While the ex-wife appealed that S $ 6,500 was necessary for monthly expenses, the ex-husband said S $ 940 was appropriate.

The woman, who used to be a flight attendant, came from a wealthy family, the Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported on Thursday (May 6). Her father is said to be a multimillionaire with a fortune of over S $ 3 million.

Meanwhile, the ex-husband is a lawyer who allegedly came from a low-income family. It was reported that the man had to repay his student loans while he was taking the bar exam for his lawyer’s license.

Before the couple married in 2016, the ex-wife helped her ex-husband repay the loans. She also covered all of her wedding expenses, Shin Min reported.

Although the ex-husband became a partner in a law firm with a monthly salary of S $ 15,000, he had to pay debts of S $ 9,000 every month.

After their marriage failed a few years later, the woman returned to her father’s apartment with her twins.

She then asked her ex-husband for maintenance. Initially, the husband paid her monthly maintenance payments of S $ 1,500, while they were divorced a year later.

The woman received payments for six months, but payments were suspended for five months before resuming in December 2019, Shin Min reported.

To make up for the missing payments, the woman asked her ex-husband to pay S $ 6,500 a month.

The judge denied her request, but appealed the decision, finding that the monthly expenses for her children were S $ 10,000 per month. This includes private school fees, residency fees, transportation costs and payment to the household helper.

However, the man stated that he had no knowledge of the children who were enrolled in a private school and that he only found out during the divorce proceedings.

He realized that he did not have the funds to pay for her expensive education. He added that a reasonable amount of maintenance was S $ 940.

In response, the woman claimed he first signed the divorce settlement in 2018 and promised to pay at least S $ 3,900 a month.

The man said he proposed such an amount only to save their marriage but had no way of paying such an amount at the time.

The ex-wife also stated that her father had billed her S $ 3,200 for rent and that she wanted to move out of his apartment. She added that 10 people lived in her father’s villa, which was not an ideal form of living.

The man suggested that she return to their marital home, but the woman declined the offer. He also questioned the authenticity of the invoice showing the rent of S $ 3,200.

According to Shin Min, the man had to support his parents and his disabled brother financially, repay his loan of S $ 2,000 per month and pay for the lease for his Mercedes Benz.

While the ex-wife stressed that the luxury car was an unnecessary expense, the man claimed he needed a vehicle that could accommodate booster seats for children
