Suspect caught red-handed “due to GPS tracking”

KUALA LUMPUR: Police yesterday arrested a man who fled in a sport utility vehicle (SUV) that was left on the side of the road by the valet attendant of a shopping mall in Jalan P Ramlee, but the suspect was later caught behind the wheel.

Dang Wangi police chief ACP Noor Dellhan Yahaya said in the incident at 12.48pm, the 31-year-old SUV owner handed the car over to the valet attendant in the parking lot before it was temporarily driven to the side of the main exit road.

“When the car was to be moved again about ten minutes later, the SUV was gone and there were fears that it had been stolen, but the car keys were still with the valet,” he said today.

Noor Dellhan said the car owner, an interior designer, was informed of the theft when he left the mall at 1.20pm and rushed to file a police report.

“The victim then contacted the Dang Wangi control center to report the loss of the car and request the publication of an 'emergency number' to locate the vehicle,” he said.

He said the SUV was found at USJ 1 Avenue, Subang Jaya, Selangor by a police MPV patrol at 2.35pm the same day and the suspect driving it tried to flee but was arrested.

“The application for remand of the 58-year-old suspect, who has two previous convictions for drug offences, will be made today to assist the investigation under Section 379A of the Penal Code,” he said.

The case had previously spread like wildfire on social media after the victim posted that he lost the car while valet parking at a shopping mall and that the SUV was tracked in Subang Jaya using his Global Positioning System (GPS) device.
