Surat: A 41-year-old school teacher set himself and his wife on fire, who worked as a computer operator at the Taluka Panchayat office in Valod, Tapi district on suspicion of infidelity. The couple have been married for nearly 20 years, police said.
In the incident, Amit Patel and his wife Mayurika (40) died on the spot from severe burns. The pair had been developing disputes over Mayurika’s alleged illicit relationship in recent months.
“They often quarreled over the suspected affair. It is believed that Patel took the extreme step on Tuesday due to the same issue. However, more detailed investigations will bring more details to light,” a police official said.
The complaint was filed by Hardeepsinh Dhariya, Taluka Development Officer. In his complaint, Dhariya said the entire office was filled with smoke from the fire and staff controlled the blaze with a fire extinguisher.
Patel arrived at the office around 3 p.m., armed with a kerosene bottle. He sprinkled the flammable material on his wife and himself and before anyone could intervene, he took out a lighter and set his wife and himself on fire.
Patel was a school teacher in Vyara while Mayurika was a contract computer operator. The couple has a 17-year-old son who is in 12th grade.
