Raipur: Furious at a wrongly dialed phone call to her husband, a woman in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district set herself on fire after feeling her infidelity. Pooja, 32, suffered 70 percent burns and is in critical condition, while husband Surajbhan also suffered burns on his hands trying to save her.
The couple, who have been married for four years, are fighting over calls from an unknown number.
Police said an unidentified woman called Surajbhan a few days ago and alerted Pooja. As the calls continued, Pooja became more suspicious, assuming the husband was cheating on her. The couple got into an argument over this and the woman confiscated his phone.
When the unidentified caller called again Tuesday morning and the caller hung up, she became angry. Angry, she called her husband who was at work and they argued again.
Pooja then went into a room, bolted the door, poured kerosene over it and set it on fire while her children were with their grandparents. Seeing her from the burning window, her husband broke down the door and tried to save her by putting out the fire.
Both were taken to the hospital by neighbors and the police informed. Doctors said Surajbhan would be discharged after initial treatment while the woman suffered severe burns.
The police have launched an investigation into the case and have yet to take the woman’s statement.
