A man who suspected her allegiance strangled his 30-year-old wife in her rented apartment in Lalru Mandi in the early hours of Tuesday morning. He kept her body in the Almirah before escaping, but was arrested hours later.
The defendant has been identified as Jasbir Singh, who is a private taxi driver and belongs to Patiala. The victim, Rama Rani, was a housewife. The couple have two underage daughters.
Police officer (SHO) Bhinder Singh Khangura said the incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. The accused, who is an alcoholic, previously suspected the woman’s allegiance and the couple had verbal arguments on a daily basis, he said.
This time, however, the argument became violent and he strangled her. During the incident, the younger daughter slept while the older daughter was with a relative, the SHO said.
After a few hours, the defendant called his in-laws, who were staying in Lalru, and asked them to come to his house as Rama and that he had to visit a place.
“When the woman’s parents got there, they found her body in an almirah and informed the police. We arrested the defendant at the old bus stand in Lalru, from where he wanted to flee to Delhi, ”said the SHO.
The defendant reportedly confessed to killing his wife when she threatened to leave him and marry another woman. A murder case has been recorded against him under Section 302 of India’s Criminal Code and he will be tried on Wednesday.
