There is no rest for Team Rex on a weekend.

Last Friday evening, PD Rex and his handler were called to assist officers in the search for a missing person in the Chester-Le-Street area.

PC Hamilton and his furry colleague made their way to the ground and moved into a large wooded area near the missing man’s address.

Due to the size of the forest and the dangerous steep slope, PC Hamilton held Rex on a tracking harness and walked around the edge of the forest in the hope that Rex would recognize the man’s entry point.

After an hour of searching, Rex found the entry point and dragged his companion into the forest, where they found the missing man hiding in plain sight. He was taken to hospital.

Jump to Saturday. PD Rex and PC Hamilton were deployed to the south of the county where they received reports of two men breaking into the Bishop Auckland Hospital Social Club.

PC Hamilton, with the help of local officers, called for containment and began searching the building with Rex in tow.

Within minutes of entering the building, PD Rex picked up a scent and led his handler to the two suspects hiding behind the bar.

Two men, aged 42 and 22, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of burglary. Both have now been charged.

Until Sunday, when PC Hamilton came across a stolen Nissan while on patrol in Murton.

The officer got behind the vehicle and followed it all the way down Shiney Row, where it stopped on a side street.

The driver stuck his head out of the vehicle and asked PC Hamilton why he was following him. But when the suspect realized it was a police vehicle, he sped away.

Officer Hamilton found the abandoned vehicle not far away and called his loyal work colleague Rex to track down the suspect.

The pair walked down the street, through a fence that led to a housing estate and into a back garden where the suspect was hiding.

While they waited for additional officers to arrive to arrest the man, the passenger of the stolen vehicle arrived and was also arrested in connection with the burglary.

Several stolen items were confiscated in the garden and investigations are currently ongoing.
