A Sharia court in Rigasa, Kaduna state, ordered on Monday that an unemployed man, Abdullahi Umar, should provide temporary protection to his elderly father, Umar Mai-tsire.
Judge Malam Salisu Abubakar-Tureta gave the order after Mai-tsire told the court that he had nowhere to live after leaving his ex-wife’s home.
Mai-tsire prayed the court to force his first son into shelter.
The judge said it is the responsibility of the children to look after their parents when they are old.
He believed that Mai-tsire had the right to seek protection from his son.
The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that Habiba Muhammad, Mai-tsire’s former wife, asked the court to force him to leave her home because they were divorced.
Mai-tsire had claimed that the house belonged to his son and would not leave, but the court later confirmed that the house belonged to his former wife.
The defendant’s son, Abdullahi, said he is not currently working but will consult his younger brother, who is a tricycle rider on the matter.
The judge adjourned the matter to March 29 for a hearing.
