A Pennsylvania man was charged with criminal murder after police confessed to stabbing and beating his wife to death with a fireplace poker and then leaving her to die in the basement of their house for two days after an argument over infidelity.
Daniel Barrett, 40, was described in indictments as being “emotional and excited” when he went to the Plymouth Police Department on Monday night and admitted that he brutally killed his wife, 43-year-old Mary Barrett, two days earlier for fraud him.
Officers went to the couple’s restored colonial home on the 100 block of Gaylord Avenue and followed a trail of blood through the house and into the basement, where they discovered the victim’s lifeless body.

Mary was allegedly found lying on the floor with a hole in her skull.
An autopsy revealed that Mary’s cause of death was blunt violent trauma and her death was murder, PAhomepage.com reported.
During an interview with investigators, Daniel said that he and Mary, his wife of more than five, got into an argument on Saturday about spending time with another man.
The argument escalated when Daniel allegedly slapped Mary in the face, after which he said he had gone black, Fox56 reported.
He told the police when he came to that he was standing over his wife and holding fire tongs over his head, which he then used to hit her.
Daniel then grabbed a fireplace poker and bludgeoned Mary with it several times “before he got caught on her body,” according to the court records.
Daniel told police that he and Mary got into an argument after she allegedly admitted to cheating on him with another man
Daniel said he punched Mary in the face (left and right) and turned black. When he came to, he stood over his wife and hit her with a fireplace tong
At that moment, the 40-year-old allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim in the lower back.
Daniel said he went to splash water on his wife and heard a noise from Mary. Then he dragged her down the stairs to the basement and left her there for dead.
According to the records, Daniel didn’t go back to the basement until the next day to cover his dead wife with a sheet.
The husband told investigators between the time he killed his wife and the time he went to the police to surrender that he was considering suicide but decided against it.

Mary served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and completed three missions in Iraq and Afghanistan before retiring in 2014 and settling in Plymouth, where she served as secretary for Plymouth Borough, The Citizens’ Voice reported.
Mary and Daniel got married in May 2015. She leaves behind a 14-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.
Friends and neighbors described Mary as a kind and caring person, a great mother, and a dedicated community servant.
“She would do anything for anyone,” Councilor Bill Dixon said of the victim.
Daniel Barrett is being held in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility without bail.
