The Wakulla County Sheriff's Office offers safe zones for child custody exchanges

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – There are now safe zones for custody exchanges in Wakulla County.

The safe zones were established following the passage of Cassie's Law in Florida this year. This law establishes that every sheriff's office in the state is a safe place for parents to exchange custody of their children.

The Wakulla County Sheriff's Office has designated two parking spaces for security exchanges in its main parking lot, adjacent to the work camp and visitation building.

“It softens things a little. “The court actually mandated that a swap be done in our parking lot before this law went into effect because that typically alleviated a lot of issues,” said Capt. Brett Surace of the WCSO. “When conducting a child exchange, always think about the child’s interest first.”

Specifically, the two parking lots will serve as a safe place for parents who share custody to safely exchange their children, according to the sheriff's office, and as a safe e-commerce zone to exchange items sold on private online sites Pages or purchased via Facebook.

The locations are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Additionally, the sheriff's office said the locations were well lit and had 24-hour video surveillance.
