<p>WINTHROP 一 Chief Terence M. Delehanty would like to announce the retirement of the esteemed Winthrop Police K-9 Clint.</p>
<p>Clint has worked with the Winthrop Police Department since April 2015 and was partnered with Officer David Brown. They began their partnership by attending a 14-week police academy followed by a 6-week narcotics detection course.</p>
<p>Clint and Officer Brown were both members of the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) K-9 team, which responds to searches of communities in the Northeastern state.</p>
<p>Clint participated in numerous search and rescue operations, missing person searches, and suspect searches during his eight years of service.</p>
<p>In particular, Clint helped locate a young girl who had been missing from Winthrop for several hours, using his ability to track scents to locate the girl hiding under a bed in an abandoned house where the grandmother lives of the girl lived. Clint also assisted Officer Brown and the Winthrop Police Department in locating a criminal suspect who kicked down the door of a home in town before escaping and hiding in a nearby garage.</p>
<p>Officer Brown noted that Clint would often walk in a large circle before following a lead.</p>
<p>“They tell you in the training courses that it’s not the dog that teaches the officer, it’s the policeman that teaches the dog,” Officer Brown said. “You learn their behavior and how they react when they’re looking for an object or a suspect, and you learn to communicate based on their behavior.”</p>
<p>Clint officially retired from his police duties earlier this week and will spend his retirement with Officer Brown and his family.</p>
<p>“It’s going to take a while for him to adjust to being home, but he’s in control of the backyard now,” Officer Brown said. “He never called in sick to work and was always willing to go with me and provide the best possible service to the people of Winthrop.”</p> </div>
