Three people have been arrested as part of an investigation in which a custody dispute ended in a shooting in Victory Lane just before noon on Christmas Eve in Aberdeen.
Aberdeen police announced Tuesday the arrests of Jaquan Goins, 20, of Aberdeen, Garrett Chalmers, 26, of Aberdeen and Maurice Purcell, 39, of Fayetteville.
“On December 24, 2024, Aberdeen officers and investigators, along with Moore County Sheriff's Office deputies, responded to the area of Midway Rd and Victory Ln in reference to nearly a dozen reports of active disturbances and numerous shots fired,” the Aberdeen Police Department said in a press release. “When we arrived, a large group of people had formed. Officers located a male perpetrator, later identified as the shooter, who had gunshot wounds to his back and side. Officers located a second shooter at the scene as well as shell casings from three different firearms. It was determined that the third shooter had already left the scene and only one firearm was recovered.”
The man who was shot was taken to Moore Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The officers examined the crime scene and obtained statements from those involved and witnesses.
“Over the next week, Aberdeen investigators continued to analyze evidence, conduct follow-up investigations and obtain statements,” the release said.
Arrest warrants were obtained on Jan. 3 for Goins on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and discharging a firearm within city limits, Chalmers on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and discharging a firearm within city limits, and Purcell on two counts counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, aggravated possession of a weapon by a felon and discharging a firearm within city limits.
Goins and Chalmers were arrested Jan. 3, appeared before a Moore County judge and were given $500,000 bonds. Purcell was arrested Jan. 6 and appeared before a judge in Moore County. He was not granted bail pending a hearing before a magistrate.
