UCI improves the safety of the driver with GPS tracking at Road World Championships

In a significant step to improve the safety of the drivers, the UCI announced that all competitors of this year's GPS trackers will install this year's road championships on their bicycles. This decision comes after the tragic death of the Swiss teenager Muriel Furrer during last year's championships.

Furrer's early death, which had unattended to the roadside over a longer period of time, triggered the introduction of safer tracking technology. The technology was originally tested in August during the Tour de Romandie feminine in Switzerland and is to be implemented at the upcoming event in Kigali, Rwanda.

UCI President David Lappartant emphasized the importance of this “important and necessary progress” to ensure the safety of the driver. The Road World Championships, which marks their debut in Africa, promises improved security measures, whereby real-time location tracking quickly reaches all incidents on the race track.
