UPDATE: Custody battle resulted in taking pictures at Northgate Mall, police stated with KTVE

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) TO UPDATE: Investigators believe a dispute over custody led to a shooting in the parking lot of a Lafayette Planet Fitness Wednesday night.

Lafayette Police Department spokesman Sgt. Wayne Griffin said around 9 p.m., officials responded to the scene where they found a 32-year-old man shot in the face.

First aid measures were taken quickly by first responders, Griffin said. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect, Bryant Batiste, 27, has been taken into custody and is now charged with attempted second degree murder.

Batiste had not been bonded until Thursday morning.

ORIGINAL: There is a heavy police presence in the Northgate Mall parking lot near Planet Fitness tonight.

Lafayette Police have confirmed they were sent to the area based on a gunshot report.

One person was shot and taken to a local hospital, police said.

Several eyewitnesses report to KLFY that several people fought in the parking lot before gunfire was fired.
