On the morning of Thursday, June 27, several police helicopters circled over Wareham while the I-195 rest area between exits 35 and 39 was swarming with emergency personnel searching for a missing person.
“The search area included woods, beaches and waterways,” said the Massachusetts State Police.
As they searched, rescue crews closed the I-195 Wareham Boat Ramp. The I-195 Wareham Boat Ramp provides access to the Weweantic River.
“It appears the missing person was found and the scene was cleared shortly after 1 p.m.,” Massachusetts State Police reported.
At about 1:32 p.m., conversations over the Wareham Fire Department's radio scanner indicated that rescuers were “just coming out of the water.”
The identity of the missing person is currently unknown.
First responders on the scene included police officers, Wareham firefighters, Marion firefighters and Massachusetts State Police. State Police helicopters, canine units and marine units were also on the scene, according to the state police.
The police and fire department at the rest stop did not want to comment on their activities.
As of 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, Wareham police declined to comment and referred questions to the Massachusetts State Police. The Wareham Fire Department also declined to comment.
