The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) of Trail is asking for the public's help in confirming whether a person is missing after two people reportedly jumped from the Victoria Street Bridge into the Columbia River in Trail around 10 p.m. Saturday evening.
A 33-year-old man from Trail made it back to the river bank after the jump and was helped by passersby.
Officers suspect the man was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the incident and was taken to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital for evaluation.
Officials contacted Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue, who deployed their rescue boat and searched the Columbia River for the second person, but no one was found during the search.
The next morning, local search and rescue teams conducted another search but were unable to find anyone.
Canadian and U.S. border authorities have been notified of a possible missing and presumed drowned person.
Since the incident, no further missing persons have been reported to the RCMP, but officers have been following up on tips from the public.
The investigation is ongoing and police are asking witnesses and anyone who knows the identity of the second person to contact the Trail Detachment at 250-364-2566.
“This incident was brief and remains quite a mystery. We would like to confirm the sighting of a second person jumping from the bridge if there are any other witnesses to this incident. If you have any information, please contact us immediately,” says Sergeant Mike Wicentowich.
