Upkeep debtors must be excluded from playing / Article / Eng.lsm.lv

On Thursday, April 8, the Saeima supported amendments to the Maintenance Guarantee Fund Act, which bans maintenance debtors from gambling, interactive gambling and lotteries, according to the Saeima Press Service.

The ban will take effect on May 1st.

This is to ensure that maintenance debtors do not use the children excessively for entertainment and hobbies. There are already a number of restrictions in place on debtors to motivate them to comply with the legal obligation. For example, a ban on the use of vehicles and ships is applied in separate cases or the operation of a weapons license is suspended.

The organizer of the game of chance is obliged to identify the person concerned and to ensure that the person is not a maintenance debtor. Similar arrangements have already been made for addicts who are entered in the register of self-denied persons.

The changes also include the introduction of a temporary pilot project using debt collection agencies to collect child support payments. The project is valid from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022.
