The Diyarbakır Bar Association Women’s Rights Center published a report on “Maintenance in the Light of Court Judgments.”

After reviewing two thousand 97 case files for the study, the Women’s Rights Center shared the results of its report at a press conference held at the Tahir Elçi Conference Hall in Diyarbakır.

Diyarbakır Bar board member Hatice Demir spoke at the conference, indicating that the report was drawn up on the basis of the two thousand 97 final decisions passed by family courts in Diyarbakır province from 2017 to 2018.

At the conference, attorney Aslı Pasinli said that while there were 897 thousand files dealing with “divorce and incidental expenses”, “alimony”, “increase in alimony” and “decrease in alimony”, a decision on alimony due to poverty was made for women in only 342 of these files.

Pasinli underlined that parental rights are predominantly granted to women, according to the report, noting that while the adoption rate for women was 74.3 percent, it was 17.1 percent for men.

According to the findings of attorney Pasinli, the amount of the poverty-related maintenance payments in 270 of the 342 files was between 100 and 500 liras (~ 12-60 USD). In 58 files, the poverty-related maintenance was between 501 and 1,000 lira and in two files it was over 3,000 lira.

When the files from 2017 and 2018 are put together, the report found, poverty-related support for women was below the hunger line in 334 of 342 files, while it was above the hunger line in just eight files. (EMK / SD)
