Upkeep pays off for Nunes | Sports activities

ANTHONY Nunes ended the weekend with consecutive wins in the final race over rival Jason DaCosta.

On Saturday, Nunes’ SPARKLE DIAMOND made every entry a winner on the night, beating DaCosta’s I AM FRED.

ALIMONY’s three-quarter length win in 1: 01.0 displaced Nunes around $ 2 million from DaCosta, who led the stakes race up to two Saturdays ago, but collapsed when BILLY WHIZ caught rival FURTHER AND BEYOND in the $ 6 million Jamaica Cup.

Tevin Foster, in good shape, drove a confident race on the 9-5 favorite ALIMONY and finished fourth behind the leader, TRUE BRAVADO, whom he overtook in the last quarter of an hour.

SUDDEN FLIGHT finished with Dick Cardenas and grabbed second place on the line from TRUE BRAVADO. DaCosta’s HEART OF THE SEA was chased off the top by ROCKET LILY and TRUE BRAVADO and finished third before getting weaker.

Omar Walker and claiming rider Matthew Bennett each rode two. Bennett opened the nine-race card with a 9-2 jumper, BLUE EPIPHANY.

Matthew returned to take eighth place with a thrilling rally astride 6-1 chance, DORTHEBUTCHER, who outpaced GORGEOUS GIFT and BETTER BEST who had given her a long race.

Walker, the disgraced six-time master rider who has tacitly partnered with Philip Feanny, brought home the 14-time master trainer’s PHOENIX RISEN in the second for two-year-olds at five stadiums.

Walker saved his best for the end and mowed down rivals within the last half furlong of the sixth event to score a 16-1 upset astride LEGAL CHANCE and beat TRADITIONAL BOY, STICKY DON and QUEEN ADELE.

The race continues on Saturday.
