Crossing the Streams is our series of guides covering all the offerings from the major streaming services each month. This time, we’re taking a look at what’s new streaming on Netflix in July 2023, including Hidden Strike starring Jackie Chan, a Bird Box spin-off, and more!
Netflix Pick of the Month July 2023
The general idea behind these picks of the month is to highlight the title we’re most looking forward to, and to that end Hidden Strike (2023, premiered on July 28) fits quite well. In fairness, there’s little reason to think it’ll be any good – it’s been on the shelf for around three years and the first trailer hints at a wealth of CG backdrops and action destined for it to leave viewers unimpressed. And yet… I’m a Chan fan, John Cena has proven to be an entertaining addition in action/comedy films elsewhere, and director Scott Waugh (he of next year’s Expend4bles) has already worked on films like Act of Valor (2012 ) created sound action. . That being said, of course, not even Renny Harlin (Skiptrace, 2016) could pull off a noteworthy late-career chan-jam, so who knows. We’ll find out together at the end of the month!
New Netflix Original Movies
I’m not the biggest fan of 2018’s Bird Box, but it was a smash hit for the streamer, meaning a sequel wasn’t out of the question. Aviary Barcelona (Premiering July 14) is more of a spin-off than a sequel, and seems to follow a mostly similar path as a family struggles with a monstrous being that will kill you on sight. (Seriously, the premise is still dumb.) On the plus side, Barbarians (2022) grabs Georgina Campbell, and he hails from the directors of the underrated Carrier (2009). Is that enough to get past the silly setup? Hopefully!
A bit more of an outlier, but it is even more starry They cloned Tyrone (Premiers July 21). Jamie Foxx, John Boyega, David Alan Grier and Kiefer Sutherland star in the comedic thriller about some sort of government conspiracy that most likely involves cloning. Director Juel Taylor follows up on his 2017 debut Actors Anonymous with a film that’s guaranteed to garner more attention thanks to its cast and streaming home. The cast is more than capable and it looks like a fun time.
The Netflix original I’m most looking forward to this month is the least well-known. paradise (Premiering July 27) is a new science fiction/thriller film from Germany that offers an interesting new angle on an otherwise familiar scenario. Science has advanced to create a way to add years and youth to the lives of people who can afford it. The catch? It is based on the ability to take life and youth from people who need money. When a woman in debt sells decades of her life, her husband sets out to win her back. It’s a great hook.
chances and end
For tragic reasons, a certain famous ship has been in the headlines lately. It sank over a century ago, but a couple of wealthy jerks made a photo op and ended up permanently ending up in Davy Jones’ locker. I don’t even know what that means. Anyway, James Camerons titanic (1997), one of its three mega blockbusters, is new to Netflix this month. The film remains a real banger, blending romance, class commentary, disaster thrills and moral dilemmas (it would have fit on that door, Rose!) into something truly special. Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bill Paxton, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates and more memorable faces star, and while the front half delivers drama and character beats, it’s the back half that delights thanks to our good friend the Iceberg. watch it again
Documentaries are no stranger to Netflix — they’re cheaper to produce, require fewer resources, and are less expensive to produce. Some have been interesting, others less so, but her latest book plunges into some pretty compelling waters. Unknown: The Lost Pyramids (Premiering July 3) kicks off the four-part series, with the remaining titles focusing on killer robots, a cave of bones, and the cosmic time machine. All four themes are interesting enough, so hopefully the execution will do justice to the source material.
We can probably all agree that Adam Devine is something of an acquired taste. As much as I appreciate him in The Righteous Gemstones, some of his feature films are a little… a lot. But hey, I always hope for the best. The outlaws (premiering July 7) sees him as a young man who discovers his fiancee’s parents are bank robbers. Crazy banter is likely to happen, and with any luck, some of it will be hilarious. The odds are improved somewhat by the presence of Ellen Barkin and Pierce Brosnan as thieves, and we also get supporting roles from Michael Rooker and Julie Hagerty, so maybe, just maybe, this will be the one.
The oldest newcomer to Netflix for July 2023
One of the legitimate criticisms of Netflix is the lack of older movies on the streamer – movies that were basically made before the ’90s – so we want to highlight the oldest newcomer each month. This month’s winner is actually a trilogy starting with The Karate Kid (1984). John G. Avildsen’s box-office hit remains a solid coming-of-age film rounded out by some remarkably weak martial arts. The Karate Kid: Part II (1986) sends Ralph Macchio to Japan so he can (apparently) forget about Elizabeth Shue, and The Karate Kid: Part III (1989) — well, I’m honest, I thought part three would be right with Hilary Swank, so I guess I’ve never seen the third part? In any case, they are the oldest newcomers! Check out the movies so Netflix sees that “old” movies have fans too. In case you don’t know, Netflix also has an ongoing series called Cobra Kai, which is ultimately a sequel to everything and is just as entertaining but still has disappointing fights.
