When Saif Ali Khan revealed he had paid 5 crore alimony to ex-wife Amrita Singh after the divorce in 2004

While Bollywood movies make us believe in fairytale love and happy endings, real life celebrities proves that “happy to the end” is not meant for everyone, and sometimes a relationship isn’t just meant that way. We’ve seen big, fat weddings in B-town that cost a bombshell for the celebrities, but over the years we’ve also seen their breakups burn a big hole in their pockets, proving that even heartbreak is expensive. With this article, let’s look back at the time when Saif Ali Khan was divorced from his ex-wife Amrita Singh and he revealed the support he had to give her. Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh had met on the set of Rahul Rawail’s film, and the former was so excited about his co-star that he decided to take them out for dinner a few days later. At their first dinner, Saif had a good time with Amrita and, in his own words, got to know her better. Not only had Saif and Amrita talked about their personal and professional lives, but the night ended with a kiss. Thus began the story of Saif and Amrita’s tumultuous love. It was when they tied the knot in 1991, but unfortunately the split ended in 2004. Thirteen years and two children later, Saif and Amrita decided to end their marriage and were divorced in 2004.

But the divorce had upset Saif Ali Khan and he had revealed that he would cry when he looked at his children Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan’s photos that he kept in his wallet. In a 2005 interview with the Telegraph, Saif revealed the alimony he had paid his ex-wife Amrita Singh. He was quoted as saying, “I’m supposed to give Amrita Rs 5 crore, of which I’ve already given her about Rs 2.5 crore. Also, I’ll pay Rs 1 lakh a month until my son turns 18. I’m not Shah Rukh Khan. I don’t have that much money. I promised her I will pay the rest of the money, and I will do it even if I have to fight until I drop dead. “When he talked about how he saved for their children, Saif continued, “Whatever I have earned from commercials, stage shows and films is given for my children. I have no money. Our bungalow is for Amrita and the children. and no matter the relatives who joined her after I left. “He concluded,” I don’t want a confrontation with Amrita. She was and will be an integral part of my life. I want her and my children to be happy. ”

However, over the years, Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh have moved on in their respective lives. While Saif married Kareena Kapoor in 2012, Amrita happily raises her and Saif’s children Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. And everyone has happily come to terms with the “modern” family relationships and share a warm camaraderie with one another. Evidence of this came in 2012 when Amrita made sure Sara and Ibrahim looked their best for their Abba, Saif’s wedding to Kareena. While Ibrahim had teamed up with Saif in a color-coordinated Sherwani, Sara looked radiant for the wedding in a neon green and pink anarkali, which she had accentuated with a maang teeka, diamond set and bracelets. Years later, when Saif Ali Khan performed with his daughter Sara Ali Khan on Koffee With Karan, he announced that he had written a letter to his ex-wife Amrita Singh prior to his wedding to Kareena Kapoor in 2012. Saif responded, recalling, “When I got married to Kareena, for some reason before I went down I wrote a note to Amrita saying,“ This is a new chapter that begins and we have our history and everything. I hope we both have good wishes. “Before Saif sent it to Amrita, he had sent the letter to Kareena asking for her thoughts. Saif had continued, “I sent it to Kareena and said take a look at this. If it’s okay, I’ll consider sending it. And she thought that was really nice. I sent it over and then Sara called me and said, “You know I’m coming anyway, but now with a happy heart I come even more.” This story sums up the attitudes of everyone involved. ”

In an interview with Pinkvilla in 2020, Saif Ali Khan spoke about his divorce with Amrita Singh and how they broke the news to their children Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. Saif had revealed how the divorce affected the children and said, “It’s the worst thing in the world. I still feel like I wish it could be different. I don’t think I’ll ever really agree to that. There are certain things that cannot be and I try to make peace with them and myself by saying that I was 20 and quite young. So many changes. They like to think of parents together, but they are also separate entities. So everyone can agree to a modern relationship. No child should be deprived of a warm home. You need to make the most of every situation you find yourself in. Life is beautiful and nobody can sit around complaining too much. Sometimes having two parents together is not best for anyone. A beautiful stable house is a wonderful environment and you want to share that with your children. ” (Also read: When Randhir Kapoor confessed that he never wanted his daughter, Karisma Kapoor wanted to marry Sunjay Kapur)
