Windtech International -Schaeffler adds the GPS tracking to the Smart Box system for large wind turbines
Schaeffler improves digital traceability in the logistics of large camps by expanding its existing smart box system with GPS-based positioning technology. The new function is tested in a proof-of-concept project, which focuses on main deposit applications in the wind power sector. The aim is to enable more precisely persecution of products and to improve transparency along the supply chain.
The Smart Box system introduced in 2021 consists of modular, reusable transport containers, which are designed for the shipping of roller bearings with large external diameters. These containers replace one -way packaging. They were built in euro pallet dimensions and can be stackable, which simplifies storage, packaging and return transport logistics.
The addition of GPS trackers enables the real-time tracking of boxing locations, especially with regard to turnaround times, downtimes and returns. This data enables more efficient delivery and return logistics. Apart from the tracking of the location, the devices also measure temperature, air humidity and acceleration and offer insights into the environmental conditions and handling during the entire transport process.
Around 300 GPS trackers are currently being used, with the focus on the main camp of wind turbines. The asset tracking technology is delivered by the German company Smartmakers. The GPS units send regular updates to an IoT platform, so that continuous optimization enables the operating data collected in the past two years.
