Woman says no to alimony payments in coins |

Jaipur: A woman on Monday refused to accept 55,000 rupees worth of coins brought by her husband as alimony arrears in a family court in the city. An application filed on her behalf with the court said any transaction involving coins of more than 1,000 rupees was void under the Coins Act 2011.
She asked the court to ensure that the money was paid in banknotes, otherwise her estranged husband would be sent to prison for failing to comply with the court’s alimony order. The man, who had not paid child support for 11 months, had paid Rs 55,000 in coins in child support for his estranged wife Seema Kumawat on June 17. The court denied the woman’s request on Monday and adjourned the matter to the next hearing on July 5.
Kumawat’s lawyer, Ramprakash Kumawat, said: “According to the 2011 Coinage Act, the weight and shape of the coins should be the same when they are issued.” Furthermore, in such cases, it would be bad if the husband, Dashrath Kumawat, was allowed to pay alimony in coins.”
Dashrath, a street vendor, was married to Seema about 12 years ago. They have a daughter who lives with Dashrath. After about three years of marriage, the couple got into a fight, which prompted the husband to seek a divorce.
