Woman says no to maintenance payments in coins | Jaipur News

Jaipur: A woman refused to accept coins worth Rs 55,000 brought by her husband as maintenance arrears at a family court in the city on Monday. A petition filed on their behalf in the court said any transaction involving coins exceeding Rs 1,000 would be invalid under the Coins Act, 2011. She asked the court to ensure that the money is paid out in banknotes, otherwise her estranged husband will be sent to prison for not complying with the court order to pay alimony. The man, who had not paid maintenance for 11 months, had on June 17 deposited Rs 55,000 in coins as maintenance for his estranged wife Seema Kumawat. The court did not decide on the woman’s application on Monday and adjourned the matter for the next hearing on July 5. Kumawat’s lawyer Ramprakash Kumawat said: “As per the Coinage Act 2011, the weight and shape of the coins should be the same as when they were issued. Also, in such cases, it would be bad if the husband, Dashrath Kumawat, was allowed to pay maintenance in coins.” Dashrath, a street vendor, was married to Seema about 12 years ago. They have a daughter who lives with Dashrath. After about three years of marriage, the couple got into arguments, which led the husband to seek a divorce.
