The program supported by state financing will use GPS technology to pursue train trips.
The tests will run on the route from Harrogate to Leeds and on two other routes in Yorkshire: Sheffield on Doncaster and Sheffield to Barnsley.
Railway Minister Lord Peter Hendy said: “I encourage everyone who regularly brings the train along these routes to get involved and help us build a ticketing system that offers passengers and communities throughout the country better experience.”
Up to 1,000 passengers can take part in any route.
The attempts that will take nine months should begin between September and November.
The program differs from pay-as-you-go because it uses GPS instead of using the contactless payment for obstacles to pursue passenger locations while traveling.
