Karan Johar is known for a specific genre of romantic movies in Bollywood. The filmmaker has often attempted to disrupt this image by making films about relationships that don’t conform to the norm. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was one such film with a story about extramarital affairs. The film had garnered mixed reactions from audiences, with many critics calling it ahead of its time.

His latest production, Gehraaiyaan, directed by Shakun Batra, also explores the angle of infidelity. When asked at the launch of the trailer if Karan would like to take a different path than the usual feel-good romances he’s known for, Karan said that this film is an appeal to audiences to make judgments and explore each character’s emotional journey to understand.

“I’ve heard it before that Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is ahead of his time. I don’t think even today if it gets released it wouldn’t be judged because I think we’re inherently a very judgmental audience. And that’s why Gehraaiyaan is so special, because it asks you to break that judgmental stereotype. It asks you to actually look into the character’s mindset and understand where it’s coming from, and not pass judgement.

“We want to see perfect people unfold on screen, but none of us are perfect. We all have our shades of gray. In fact, we walk the path of horror much more than the path of black or white. If you dwell really deep within yourself, you will understand that this creates everyone’s emotional color,” Johar said.

He added that there is a rare combination of emotion and thrill in the film, something new to Bollywood. “What Shakun has done has added another facet to an emotional film that could look like a film about infidelity. But it’s also exciting to see which people might not be captured in the trailer. There’s an element of thrill like if you were on your feet in the second half of the movie you really were as scared as the characters. He’s actually immersed himself in a new kind of genre that I don’t think Indian cinema has experienced. It’s what the world calls domestic noir – I’ve never understood what that means until now – but all I can say is that it’s an emotional film, but you may as well be on the edge of your chair sit, and that’s a combination that’s rare,” explained Johar.
