“He accused me of infidelity, hit me and my male purchasers; threw my issues away

The Class A Common Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has adjourned a decision on a woman’s lawsuit for divorce, Tawakalitu Motunrayo, against her husband, Musibau Motunrayo.

Tawakalitu, who dragged her husband into court, accused him of irresponsibility and assault.

The plaintiff stated that the defendant constantly evaded his responsibility towards her and her three children.

She added that he had a habit of hitting her and that he refused to give in even when she was pregnant, resulting in the loss of her third pregnancy.

Tawakalitu further said that Musibau never trusted her.

She told the court he had always accused her of dating her male customers, adding that he would come to her store to destroy her merchandise, fight with those men and rain curses on her.

Tawakalitu stated that her husband had made her life miserable and therefore prayed in court to end their relationship and put their children in her care.

She also asked the court to order him to pay back the money she loaned him and also hold him responsible for the welfare of her children.

In response, Musibau claimed he paid his children’s school fees on time and gave them N2,000 for food every other day.

The defendant admitted that he owed the plaintiff N90,000 but asked the court for help in recovering three documents in her possession relating to his property.

Tawakalitu said in her statement: “My lord, Musibau once left our home for four months and did not care for the survival of our children.

“I reported him to his mother after waiting for him to return, but he didn’t show up. She told me to ignore him and focus on the welfare of our children.

“She then confided to me that she had learned that he wanted to take a new wife,” the plaintiff said.

She added: “I have never enjoyed my marriage to Musibau since we got married, mainly because he is irresponsible and brutal.

“Musibau almost always beats me. He refused to change even when I was pregnant.

“He beat me until I bled while carrying our third pregnancy and I ended up losing the baby after being hospitalized for weeks.

“He extended this hostile behavior to our first child, who felt relieved to be away from home for four months.

“My husband didn’t trust me. He would always accuse me of dating my male clients and beat me to a pulp.

“Musibau would turn my shop upside down and destroy my goods. He would then fight with my clients and rain curses on them.

“I was embarrassed every time he did that because people would always gather outside my shop to see the shameful scene.

“Not satisfied, he started accusing me of dating an Alfa. He asked me to swear on a Koran and I did, but he wasn’t convinced.

“He later punched Alfa and I and almost mutilated us before we were rescued from his hands.

“I decided to pack my things out of our rented apartment and move into my own house after he nearly obliterated me by hitting me.

“My lord, Musibau has hurt and embarrassed me enough. I’ve been through hell in the 13 years we’ve been married and I want to put an end to it.

“All I want from this honorable court is that it dissolve our marriage and give me custody of our children.

“I am also asking the court to hold my husband responsible for the upkeep of our children.

“My lord, I loaned my husband a significant amount of money to boost his business, but he squandered it. I want a refund of this money,” Tawakalitu explained.

Musibau replied, “My lord, I have always suspected that Tawakalitu is cheating on me, and my friend has confirmed this. He informed me while we were both in police custody after an argument that my wife has chains of lovers that put her to bed.

“Tawakalitu moved from my house to her new building after we had a disagreement and argument.

“I looked for her there and met her in an uncompromising position with an Alfa, which is obviously her lover,” he said.

“My lord, I am a responsible father. I pay our children’s school fees when they are due.

“I also give them N2,000 as feed money every other day.

“It is true that I owe Tawakalitu N90,000 and promise to pay back, but I am asking this court to help me locate three documents related to my property,” he concluded.

After hearing both parties, the Court President, Ms. SM Akintayo, ordered the three children to be brought to court by a specific date and adjourned the case until April 14.

Both parties were advised to keep peace.
