The Nigerian Feminist Forum has condemned the act of the people of Aguleri, Anambra state, who exposed a widow, Ajuese Obiora, for alleged infidelity and the death of her husband.
In a statement signed by NFF communications officer Angela Nkwo, the group called on the Anambra State Police Commissioner and the Inspector General of Police to fish out all perpetrators of what they described as inhuman degradation.
The statement, titled “NFF condemns Aguleri people for humiliating over 100 Nigerian women,” was made available to The PUNCH on Monday.
It read in part: “The Nigerian Feminist Forum has condemned with regret and disappointment what they have described as the barbaric degradation of womanhood by some Aguleri people in parading naked a widow, Mrs. Ajuese Obiora, for alleged infidelity and the death of her husband .
“NFF, in a statement signed by its communications officer, Angela Nkwo said that the action of the Obiora family and the Aguleri people by horrific chauvinists and patriarchists is humiliating over 100 million Nigerian women and humanity.
“The group called on the Anambra State Police Commissioner and the Inspector General of Police to single out all perpetrators of what they described as the inhuman degradation of Ajuese and her prosecution.
“The group called for the publication of a public apology from the widow’s in-laws, the Obiora family and the Aguleri community, which was published in national dailies.
“Furthermore, the feminist group called on the Igwe of the Aguleri community to ostracize all perpetrators of Ajuese’s inhumane abuse, to serve as a deterrent to others against such insidious acts.”
The group also called on the state governor-elect, Prof. Charles Soludo, and his wife, Ms. Nonye, to ensure that Ajuese receives “appropriate support to promote her mental, psychological, financial and overall well-being to keep her from suicidal thoughts.” and more to ward off harm from entrenched patriarchs in the Aguleri community”.
