The Oyo Assembly urges the Makinde administration to install GPS tracking devices in patrol vehicles
The Oyo State House of Assembly on Thursday appealed to the state government to install Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking devices in patrol vehicles donated to various security agencies.
In debating a proposal, lawmakers said it would help monitor the locations and movements of all patrol vehicles at all times of the day.
“This will help improve service delivery and officer safety and ensure rapid responses,” they added.
The motion also called for more patrol cars to be deployed at night, which is when most crimes typically occur.
“This will make it more difficult for criminals to impose their will,” the lawmakers argued.
The application said, in part, “Although security agencies have made commendable efforts to curb crimes and maintain law and order, there is still room for improvement.”
“The crime rate in Oyo State remains worrisome, especially at night. Despite security surveillance, thefts, kidnappings, armed robberies and gang violence occur.
“The state government needs to introduce advanced technologies like GPS.”
While speaking on one of the resolutions, Dawood Olalere (Ibadan North West State Constituency/PDP) called on the executive branch of government to raise public awareness on the toll-free line.
He said this would be done through the state Ministry of Information and Orientation and the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS).
Mr Olalere said this would be available 24 hours a day for residents to report emergencies. “Everyone needs to be aware of this,” he said.
The motion also urged security agencies to proactively combat crimes by making full use of tools and equipment.
The motion was co-sponsored by Mr. Olalere and the Leader of the House of Representatives, Sanjo Adedoyin.
