While he didn’t directly address his recent split from Barbie Imperial, Diego Loyzaga admitted that he made new “discoveries” about himself while vacationing in the United States last December.
“What I’ve learned is that when you take time off, you get answers to questions that you don’t get from certain people or certain situations,” he said in a virtual conference for his upcoming romance drama The Wife Movie on streaming platform Vivamax. “Sometimes when you’re alone, you find the answers.”
Diego was not alone all the time, he visited and spent time with some of his family members and friends. But the experience, he said, was “therapeutic” nonetheless. “I travelled a lot. And it was so therapeutic to just be driving on the road late at night or flying from place to place,” he said.
He declined to elaborate on exactly what his “new discoveries” were, but reiterated the importance of taking care of one’s sanity.
“I want to keep what I’ve learned about myself to myself. But I can definitely say, take some time off if you need to,” he said.
“If it’s for your sanity, it’s not something OA (overacting) … it’s not asking too much. I believe everyone should be able to do that for themselves.”
“Being far away from my situation, seeing it differently, gives so much more color to what’s happening and it’s beautiful. It’s good to have time to yourself. It’s been a busy last year so it’s been a nice holiday,” added the 26-year-old actor.
In “The Wife,” directed by Urian Award-winner Denise O’Hara, Diego stars as Cris, whose marriage to his caring, soft-spoken wife Mara (Louise de los Reyes) goes awry after he cheats on her with his fiery ex-girlfriend Lee (Cara Gonzales).
thoughts of infidelity
Cris then tries to pick up the pieces, but is then diagnosed with a terminal illness – forcing his betrayed wife to take care of him. Cris’s dying wish tests Mara’s resolve yet again.
When asked about his thoughts on the subject of infidelity, Diego said he doesn’t think being “Marupok” or “Tukso” is justified. “Cheating is a choice,” he insisted. “If you cheat, it’s either something you’re not sure about. Maybe you’re not ready to settle down yet. Or maybe that’s your reaction to something your partner is doing. But that still doesn’t justify the act,” he said.
Personally, Diego said infidelity is something he can’t just sugarcoat. “It’s hard to look past something like that… Ang hirap na tanggapin well,” he said.
But it all boils down to the couple and their situation, Diego added.
“Maybe it’s a one-off thing. It’s entirely up to the couple if they still want to fight for the relationship. It depends on how you deal with the problem… If you can overlook that, then fine. If not, then it is what it is,” he said. “That’s why the character Mara is unique. She can see beyond what happened and still take care of her husband.”
accountability
And if the offending party insists on repairing a broken relationship, then he or she must first be held accountable. “You should acknowledge your wrongdoing and say something like, ‘Let me make this right. It’s what I’m willing to do… For the rest of my life I’m going to prove it to you,'” he said.
“If you’re not sure what you want, respect your partner and be honest. Take the time to analyze what you’ve done. If you still see a future with that partner now, you need to work on seeking forgiveness and regaining trust,” he added.
Communication is another important part of the relationship. “You two should talk to each other in a way that’s clear about what you need to fix; what to stop or start. If you don’t, the problem will just come back and you’ll eventually get to a point where you can’t get it to work,” he said.
If there’s one thing Diego learned about filming The Wife, it’s that “the time you have to love someone is never guaranteed.” “Someone can get sick or leave your side. Nothing is insured. Tomorrow is not safe. The people you love, love them as much as you can,” he said.
