A 42-year-old Puna woman who is the subject of a missing persons investigation has an unfulfilled warrant for her arrest, police confirmed.
Monica Marie Haltom was reported missing in November, and police issued another bulletin on Friday searching for clues to her whereabouts.
Police Lt. Rio Amon-Wilkins of the Hilo Criminal Investigations Division said a bank order issued March 12, 2020 against Haltom’s arrest remains in effect.
Court filings show that Haltom, who was on a four-year suspended sentence for a 2019 conviction of unauthorized control of a stolen vehicle, did not show up for an Aug. 8, 2019 proving of compliance hearing.
After failing to appear for court-ordered mental health and substance abuse evaluations with the Big Island Substance Abuse Council in December 2019, a motion to revoke her probation was filed on March 11, 2020. A bank order for her arrest and $2,000 bail was issued the following day.
According to Amon-Wilkins, Haltom is staying on the island and the police have been on the phone with her. “She told a detective that she wouldn’t turn herself in because she doesn’t want to go to jail,” Amon-Wilkins said.
Amon-Wilkins said the missing person’s inquest was launched in November because Haltom’s mother, who is on the mainland, reported them missing.
“We need to keep the missing person investigation open until we see them in person,” Amon-Wilkins said. “It’s not enough for someone to tell us they’ve seen them. We have to see them with our own eyes.”
Haltom is described as being 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. She is known for being a frequent visitor to the city of Pahoa and the Nanawale Estates.
Anyone with information regarding Haltom’s whereabouts is asked to call the Police Department 911 at (808) 935-3311 or contact Detective Scotty Aloy at (808) 961-2381 or email Scotty.Aloy@hawaiicounty.gov . Those who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.
