Police arrested a man on Sunday for allegedly choking his wife to death, officials said. Asmat Ali, 28, was arrested in Ghata village, Sector 58, where he lived with his late wife Sunifa, 27.
According to police, the incident happened on Friday evening. Ali called Sunita’s family members after the incident and told them they had died by suicide. The family found her body on the ground when they reached the house. Ali claimed he put her down to revive her, investigators said. Sunita’s family members discovered a wound on her neck, but little did they know that she was murdered.
First, an investigation according to § 174 StPO was carried out with the suspicion of suicide. An autopsy was performed on Saturday and the report received on Sunday indicated that she was choked to death. Police then registered an FIR under Section 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code against Ali at Sector 65 Police Station on Sunday evening.
Ali married Sunita in 2013 after leaving her first husband. The couple lived with Sunita’s eight-year-old daughter from her previous marriage and her three-year-old daughter. Sunita’s father, Astab Sheikh, claimed Ali suspected she had started reconnecting with her ex-husband. According to him, the suspect has repeatedly attacked Sunifa over the past week over his suspicion. Astab also said Ali was asked to meet with the whole family and have his doubts clarified.
Gurugram Police Public Relations Officer Subhash Boken said the suspect was remanded in police custody for questioning.
