A lawyer, Ms. Bukola Ajayi, said adultery is the most common reason divorced spouses give in court as the reason for their marriages being dissolved.
Speaking in Lagos on Saturday, Ajayi revealed that “95 percent of those seeking a divorce in court have made allegations of adultery against their spouses.”
According to her, the main culprit of marital breakups is adultery, considered the most important breach of trust and difficult to forgive in any relationship.
“The spouse who has remained faithful will feel hurt, angry, and betrayed, and divorce may be the only solution,” she noted, citing lack of intimacy, unhappy relationships, lack of care, abandonment, infertility as common contributing factors Infidelity Between Spouses.
“Adultery is just a way of life for some people; No matter how their spouses please them in all areas, they will still cheat,” Ajayi said.
Although adultery is a criminal offense under Sections 387 and 388 of the Northern Nigeria Penal Code, the legal luminary noted that it (adultery) is not a criminal offense in the southern and eastern parts of Nigeria where the Penal Code applies, adding that some faiths and cultures, however, condemn them.
“Some cultures view adultery as morally wrong, while some religions view it as a sin,” she added.
