Infidelity is one of the most difficult challenges that can be experienced in a relationship.

It can cause great trauma and affect a person’s mental health.

It took Lesley Ann van Niftrik two years to rebuild her life after she found out her husband was cheating on her.

At some point during this difficult time, Van Niftrik says, she came close to suicide.

After Van Niftrik found a way to recover from the traumatic experience, she made it her mission to help others ravaged by infidelity.

She founded Life After Infidelity 4U, a recovery program for those traumatized by an unfaithful partner.

The life coach says the unresolved trauma of infidelity can overshadow a person’s life for long periods of time if left untreated.

She says the typical healing process is anywhere from 18 months to two years.

Van Niftrik says processing the pain of infidelity can be difficult, especially when the cheating partner shows no remorse.

She says it’s important for people to honor their feelings and be patient with themselves as they navigate a rollercoaster of emotions including hurt, betrayal, resentment and anger.

There is the question of regret… When the partner simply ignores them [your feelings] and starts swearing at you, then you know the chances of restoring your marriage or partnership are slim… it’s just not going to happen. And I find it very devastating to know that.

You have to give yourself time to make the right decision…and accept the fact that these rollercoaster rides will happen all the time.

When I realized my husband was having an affair, I had to move out of the house and look for another apartment. But that was probably minor compared to what I was going through. Little did I know then that it would take me two years to recover.
