Spouse kills herself, two youngsters for infidelity of her husband

A mother of three set fire to her house in Kenya, killing herself and two of her children aged 4 and 2.

The incident took place in Sirende village, Lugari subdistrict, Kakamega district, on New Years Day, January 1, 2022, after she accused her husband of cheating on her with another woman.

The woman, identified as Hellen Vuyanzi, 35, reportedly doused parts of the house with gasoline before setting it on fire Saturday night.

Their third child, 11 years old, survived the tragedy after jumping out of the house through a window.

Lugari Subdistrict Police Commander Bernard Ngungu told The Standard that Vuyanzi had accused her husband of infidelity.

“We had previously advised Vuyanzi and her spouse, Thomas Amito, after a domestic argument broke out between them. We know that Hellen accused Thomas of cheating on her with another woman, ”said Ngungu.

According to police, Vuyanzi may have bought gasoline from a local gas station and used it to set her marriage home on fire.

Vuyanzi’s neighbor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the deceased and her partner kept having domestic disputes.

“The two quarreled from time to time, with the woman accusing her husband of infidelity. We didn’t expect that their problems would end tragically, ”said the neighbor.

Stephen Okila, the cousin of Vuyanzi’s husband, said Amito called him Saturday night and told him that his (Amitos) house was on fire because Amito was not home at the time.

“I rushed to his house and confirmed that it was true, that the house was on fire. Unfortunately, my cousin’s wife and her two children, aged 4 and 2, were already burned to death. We know that the couple’s oldest child, an 11-year-old boy, managed to escape through the window, ”said Okila.

Okila said he was unaware of any marital problems his cousin Amito had with his partner.

“I was close to them, and I haven’t heard of any problems with their marriage,” he added.

The bodies of Vuyanzi and her two children were taken to the morgue at Webuye County Hospital.
